BCP Council (Bournemouth): Pure Town Planning are pleased to have won an appeal against BCP Council relating to a house near the seafront at Alum Chine in Bournemouth. In September 2025 Pure Town Planning obtained planning permission for a scheme designed by Marlow Architects which involved extending and fully remodelling the house including installing a new swimming pool and a minor alteration to an existing garage outbuilding (see here). We then submitted a Section 73 application to make various amendments to the proposed scheme including building an additional first floor above the existing garage. The Council had no issues with any of the amendments except for the garage first floor – which they considered would be harmful to the street scene and the character of the area.
On appeal we arguing that the extended garage would fit comfortably within the local street scene. The Planning Inspector agreed, noting that while the change increased the building’s prominence slightly, it was not sufficient to harm the character or appearance of the area.
To minimize project delays during the process, a “two-pronged strategy” was used: a second Section 73 application covering all other approved amendments (excluding the disputed garage height) was submitted simultaneously and approved during the appeal process.
If you have recently had an application refused why not speak to Pure Town Planning about whether an appeal would be worthwhile, or a revised application or perhaps even both together.
