BCP Council (Christchurch area): Matt is pleased to share the news that he has recently secured planning permission for extensions, alterations and a contemporary remodel of an end of terrace dwelling with stunning views over Christchurch Harbour which has been cleverly designed to a very high standard by Marlow Architects.

The scheme sought to revitalise the existing dwelling into a contemporary 4 bedroom family home incorporating larger fenestration arrangements and balcony areas in order to maximise views across Mudeford and over Christchurch Harbour.

We provided a comprehensive Design and Access Statement to justify why a contemporary approach on the end of a somewhat dated terrace of properties was acceptable in terms of character and appearance of the area and neighbouring amenity. Despite vigorous and at times quite personal objections from neighbours, the planning officer agreed with our view confirming that:

“The design, specifically the flat roof is notably different to adjoining and surrounding dwellings. There is considerable uniformity to the surrounding properties in this block of terraces in terms of form and
design. Several of the properties on this block of terraces have already been subject to alterations. The development will inevitably appear as something of a contrast to the surrounding buildings. There is a minor impact from the proposals but the extent of this is limited by the setting of the dwelling at the end of the terrace. Furthermore, the proposals to the rear will not change significantly from the exiting and would not have a significant negative impact on the setting of Mudeford Quay Conservation Area”.

Hopefully the modernisation of this property will act as a catalyst and pave the way for others in the terrace to achieve the same high quality contemporary design on their own properties.
