BCP Council (Bournemouth area): Great news for early risers and fitness enthusiasts in Bournemouth — planning consent has recently been granted for the The West Hants Club to open its doors at 6:30am, half an hour earlier than it previously could.
Despite a couple of objections, the planning officer carried out a thorough review of the proposal, considering the area’s character, neighbouring amenities, and highway safety. Her conclusion? The earlier start poses no harm to the appearance or feel of the neighbourhood, and because the club’s activities at that time are indoors only, it’s not expected to generate any disruptive noise for nearby residents.
Importantly, the original restriction dates all the way back to 1998, when planning policies – and society’s habits – were very different. Since then, working patterns have evolved, and many gyms and retailers now operate earlier and later to meet modern demand.
The officer noted that while any minor impact from the earlier opening is limited, the benefits far outweigh it. Enabling the community to access health, fitness, and wellbeing facilities earlier in the day supports a healthier lifestyle and a more active community. In short: refusing the application would have been unreasonable given the minimal impact and the clear public benefits.
If you have a commercial premises and would like to vary opening hours, pursue a change of use application, or any other commercially-related planning application for that matter, we would be happy to chat through it with you.
