East Devon District Council: Pure Town Planning are thrilled to announce that we have secured planning permission for alterations, extensions and the conversion of a former gymnasium to a new convenience store in Axminster town centre.

Working in collaboration with UAN Architecture, we prepared, submitted and managed a planning application for the proposed development.

As part of the application, we prepared a comprehensive supporting design, access, planning and heritage statement which set out the merits of the proposal in a clear and concise manner, whilst making it clear that the development was in accordance with adopted planning policies that support economic growth and the provision of new town centre retail use.

During the course of the application, we negotiated with the Planning Officer and agreed mutually acceptable changes to the position of the plant room and the fenestration design.

Upon considering of the amended plans and supporting documents, the Council agreed with our conclusions that the proposal would enhance the Axminster Conservation Officer. The Planning Officer recommended approval and stated within her report that:

“The proposed changes would make the building appear smarter and as such it is considered that the development would make a minor positive contribution to the appearance of the area which would more than compensate for the loss of the mural, with the net visual impact of the proposal being slightly positive. The conservation officer raises no objection to the proposal, considering that it would not result in any harm to the conservation area, noting that the existing building has limited value and that its refurbishment would help to enhance its aesthetic value.”
